200 Yards is a Lightbox SF project

Jana Carrey Photography has a new home in Studio # 113, Art Explosion, 744 Alabama Street, San Francisco, 94110.

The dust is still settling, but things are moving fast as I prepare for my upcoming summer group shows, 50-50 Show III and 200 Yards @ Cafe Royale.

I’m excited to have a space at Art Explosion and to be a part of this local, vibrant and supportive arts community.

Please send me a text or an e-mail and come by to say hi!

I’m honored to have been again accepted from a pool of 120 artists to be in the juried show, 50/50 Show III @ the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, CA.  I will create 50 works of art in 50 days, beginning today, Monday June 13, 2011 and ending Monday, August 1, 2011. For the show, each artist committed to a specific theme and medium of their choice and was given 50 6″ x 6″ MDF panels on which to create their works.   I will begin a new series, Senseless Acts of Beauty, creating digital c-type photographic prints, perhaps with a surprise element or two.

I’m excited to see how the Senseless Acts of Beauty series will evolve over the next 50 days, in my quotidian rituals within San Francisco, as well as during trips throughout the greater bay area and in Costa Rica! My first day was magical in that I spent my spare moments looking for unexpected beauty in obvious and not-so-obvious places. What a grand adventure these next 50 days will be.

The 50/50 Show III will be on display from the grand opening on August 26th thru the grand closing on October 2nd.  There will be a ticketed preview on August 25th. For details about last year’s show, the 50-50 Show II, please check my archives.

I will do my best to blog about my progress throughout the next 50 days. If all goes well this project will unfold into the “Not-so-Random Acts of Kindness, Senseless Acts of Beauty,” project.  I’m thinking of these first 50 days as the pilot phase. If you would like more information about the show or the process, please contact me and stay tuned for more updates soon!

In just under a month, I’ll be hitting the road for a short surf, yoga and photographic adventure in Montezuma, Costa Rica with one my best gal pal’s in celebration of our 30th birthdays. In anticipation of that journey I’m showcasing some old favorite images and delights from a 9-month journey I took through South and Central America back in 2005. These images are new to you…dear fans, friends and folks on the blogosphere.  Many of the images in this series featured in Lynda.com’s tutorial on InDesign CS3 Long Docs.

Wok+Wine

April 30, 2011

On Tuesday, April 26th, I had the honor of being invited to be the first artist to show my work @ Wok+Wine. I was delighted to bring art into this creative event, demonstrating how a few of my favorite things: food, fun events and art, can work together to make an evening spectacular.

I exhibited images from Childhood II, Series 7. These giclée, 16″ x 20″ canvas prints  looked brilliant in the event space, as they were set playfully against the dramatic backdrop of the San Francisco city skyline.

These images are for sale and/or for exhibition.  If you have an event or space for which you would like to include my work, or would like help conceptualizing how art can help enliven your event, please contact me!

In January, my friend and co-worker Maggie Spicer (check her out @ A Curious Palete and A Moose Bouche Productions) invited us down to Pie Ranch for the volunteer work day, potluck and barn dance. Pie Ranch is a working farm located just south of Pescadero that hosts educational farm-based programs. Pie Ranch also works with educators and community collaborators in diverse settings so students can apply what they’ve learned at the Ranch into their daily lives. If you are interested in checking out Pie Ranch, their next volunteer work day is March 19th!

I’d been wanting to go for a while and this trip proved not to disappoint! Here are my favorite farm photos from that day*:

*(Sorry folks, no barn dance photos – I was too busy dancing and munching on organic goodness to photograph!)

Event photography is much more fun when:

a) its your own party

b) your guests are fantastical, creative, and fun

c) the picture-taking is collaborative

d) all of the above!

I’m going to have a few pieces in a collaborative art show that opens tonight Sunday (2/27) from 4-9 pm.

This is my first time showing my work in someone’s home and I love the DIY attitude of turning your communal home into a gallery to bring local neighborhood artists together. This show also will feature some live music and comedy acts, and will have a dedicated room for the screening of films…

If you have time before your Oscar party stop by 1250 Fell Street for an early evening of art – there will be a little something for everyone!

These boots were made…

I’ve long had a fascination with living walls, roofs, succulents and funky eco-designs. Having recently learned to cultivate happy succulents (the key relies in not over-watering, especially in moist SF)…I’ve now become a fanatic. Speaking of obsessed I seem to go through phases were certain objects or motifs really preoccupy my mind’s eye.  Right now its succulents, boots, balloons and birds.

I digress… so SF is a treasure trove for dumpster divers and one need not dive to find anything, it’s often right there on the street corner!  One day, I was super psyched to find these pink cowboy boots on the streets of my ‘hood and after realizing they were a) too small and b) too old to wear – I immediately envisioned my own mini-succulent eco-garden.  The perfect size for a window table in my smallish city flat.  And one day, when I graduate to a real garden, I can put these babies in a prime patch of sunny earth.
